Lancaster High School Career Fair

Lancaster High School Career Fair
My colleague Dorian and I were invited to Lancaster High Schools first ever Career Fair.  We had an awesome time talking with the students about their goals and aspirations of becoming whatever they dream of becoming.   It's nice to talk to the young people and get an idea of where they envision themselves after college or immediately after they graduate from high school.  It's a fact that everyone doesn't go to college or a trade school.  Although formal higher education does increase your odds of having a successful career as opposed to just having a job, it's not the only way to make a descent living.

I am a living example of this truth.  I have taken a little more than a year of college, but for the most part most of what I currently do at my job is something that I've learned while on the job.  I am a blessed man in every way.  It is a fact that I'll probably only be able to go so far without a degree, but I'm committed to learning as much as I can in any way that I can.

A few of the young men and women really impressed me.  They impressed me because they sounded like they had a clear idea about what type of profession that they wanted to do.  Brandon wanted to be a Mechanical Engineer, Xavier wanted to be a chef, Jackie wanted to be a journalist, another young lady wanted to be a social worker, and another a parole officer.  Some of them will realize that they really aren't passionate about their initial fields that they are choosing now.

Dorian and I never found that no one was into technology or business analysis, which is what we do.  Honestly, I don't know anyone who says, "I want to be a Business Analyst when I grow up".  But, on the other hand, I happened to bring my camera along and placed it on our table and it attracted a lot more kids to our table.  This gave us the opportunity to talk about having a "Side Hustle" if you will.  The reality is that oftentimes, we perform a job just to pay the bills, but if we are wise, we can create a backup plan for ourselves to assist us with supplemental income.  Most side jobs that people have are actually things that they really enjoy doing.  And for some people, they love it so much that they end up making it their full time job.  I could only wish.  But, nonetheless, it does give you options.

Thanks to my good friend Rodney for inviting us out.

God, bless these young people, the future leaders of our world.  Help them to be able to focus on their future.  Give them a clear vision of their goals and help them to execute their plans with precision and enthusiasm.  Most importantly, keep them humble and open their hearts and ears to wise counsel.  Amen
