Po Melvin's Restaurant Review

For my going away lunch, Ed and James decided to take me to a little restaurant in Irving that I've never been to before. Therefore, I politely obliged. They took me to Po Melvin's Down Home Cookin'. Their slogan is "SOOO Good 'It'll Make Ya Wanna Slap Yo Mama". And you know what? They were right. The food was sooooo good. I ordered the Fried Pork Chops. These well seasoned, well battered delectable pieces of meat were accompanied by 3 sides. I decided on their perfectly sweetened yams, super smooth mashed potatoes with creamed gravy and the buttered carrots. Then I heard Ed order cabbage as one of his sides and wondered how I missed that on the menu. So I decided to substitute my carrots for the cabbage. There aren't many places where you can get cabbage without it being picked or thrown in cole slaw. Everything was wonderful. The waitress, Debbie, also brought out some of their jalepeno corn bread. Not bad at all. It wasn't too hot and it had kernals of corn mixed throughout this little piece of heaven. It still doesn't eat my mama's cornbread, but it was still pretty good. This is one of the only places I've found in the city that serve REAL FOOD.

As for the atmosphere, by no means is it a whole in the wall, although I personally, love those types of places. At the same time, it was nowhere near commercial, yet I still felt pretty comfortable. Near the entrance of the restaurant, there was a wall of fame filled with autographed photos of local patrons and celebrities who visited the restaurant. (Mike Tyson, George Forman, George Teague (The guy who tacked Terrell Owens for disrespcting the Star), Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Muhammad Ali to name a few). The wait staff was very cordial and food came out quickly.

This place gets an A in my book and I look forward to my next visit. Heck, it may even be this evening. Thanks Ed and James for introducing me to one of the best down-home eating experiences I've had in a long time.
